Connecting Ophthalmologists from Around the World to Achieve Eye Health for Everyone

ICO Center for Advocacy

Overview - World Alliance for Sight

The ICO encourages the formation of health systems and an environment that enhances eye health.

The World Alliance for Sight

Acting as the unified voice of ophthalmology, the ICO continues to build and lead a World Alliance for Sight to preserve and restore vision for people around the world, with the aim of improving quality of life and advancing global development. The ICO works to leverage member networks, knowledge and influence to promote eye health and position it as a top priority on the global policy agenda.

The ICO collaborates with ophthalmology societies and organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders to increase support for eye care and prevention of vision loss worldwide. The ICO helps to define and share information to enhance appropriate eye care. We support the establishment of a universal high standard of quality for ophthalmic professional services to improve access to affordable, quality eye care for all people worldwide.

ICO Advocacy seeks to:

  • Represent and advocate for ophthalmology and ophthalmologists to build capacity for human resources in eye care development, patient care and patient safety, research, and an optimized regulatory framework.
  • Promote relationships and collaboration with relevant international, governmental and nongovernmental organizations, institutions and eye departments, industry partners, and related organisations to advocate for global equitable, accessible eye care as a prerequisite of increased quality of life and socio-economic development.
  • Develop and implement targeted strategic communications to reinforce advocacy and build awareness.
  • Support ICO Member Societies and ophthalmologists in their evidence-based advocacy and awareness-building programmes for eye health through targeted tools and resources.
  • Establish and implement an outreach capacity plan and partnership program with organisations and other stakeholders who are actively engaged in ophthalmology to secure resources for ICO services, programmes and international advocacy efforts.
